Job Summary: The Controls Engineering Technician's role is to install and commission complex industrial finishing and dispensing systems. The Controls Engineering Technician will work amongst a team of highly technical electrical / controls experts in the finishing and dispensing industries. Responsible for the successful installation, startup, and commissioning of finishing and dispensing systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interpret customer/sales specifications and scopes of work to evaluate feasibility, design, and implementation of customized automation solutions.
- Provide world class technical support to OTC sellers, customers, and vendors.
- Improve reliability and performance of OTC supplied equipment and/or solutions.
- Add value to our customers' operations through technology and automation.
- Work with the quote desk to generate customer proposals.
- Execute all aspects of the projects from order to implementation ($0 to ~$100k projects)
- Mech/Elec Drawings
- PLC/HMI Programming
- Robotics / AMR's
- All other peripheral devices
- Collaborate and work with the greater systems engineering team on larger projects with target customers in the regional area. (Projects $~100k and above)
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Desire and ability to learn new controls technology.
- Provide technical support, problem solving, maintenance, modifications/updates, and continuous improvement for existing automated equipment and process control systems
- Lead efforts for the remediation, migration, or upgrade of existing control systems
- Implement new and/or modify existing programming and HMI screens in various control platforms such as, but not limited to:
- Allen Bradley, Omron, Mitsubishi, Exor, Codesys, Seimens, ToyoPuc, and more
- ToyoPuc experience a plus.
- SCADA experience a plus.
- Participate in capital projects, new installations, testing, and modernization projects for new systems.
- Specify all components (parts) needed for project completion.
- Provide customer with all CAD drawings needed for project completion.
- Provide software programming, including PLC, HMI, etc.
- Other job duties, as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Associate's degree and minimum experience of 5-7 years working in a related field; or relevant combination of education and experience
- Minimum 3 years' experience working within an industrial manufacturing and/or automation environment
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in system installation and troubleshooting of complex automation projects
- Proven understanding of drafting techniques/engineering terminology and ability to understand and comprehend detailed electrical/pneumatic and fluid schematics.
- Experience with Industiral Safety Application equipment a plus
- Knowledge and understanding of control systems such as Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, Omron, Siemens, etc.
- Ability to configure Touch Screen HMI's
- Proven experience in rigging; ability to plan the lift, determine the right equipment and techniques, and execute the process to avoid accidents or equipment damage or failures
- Proven understanding of different units of measurement
- Proven mechanical aptitude and can apply this to daily work being performed.
- Ability to travel up to 75% of the time within the United States; willingness to work weekends, split shifts, daily overtime, and holidays, as needed.
- Proven mechanical and electrical knowledge sufficient to diagnose and resolve basic equipment problems
- Proven experience in disassembling equipment needing repair, diagnose problems, clean and refurbish/replace parts as needed, reassemble, and test
- Ability to use/operate tools such as wrenches, drivers, and power tools
- Proven experience utilizing electrical diagnostic equipment
- Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
- Ability to understand written and oral English and be proficient with computer, email, spreadsheets and look up documents online
- Ability to learn and use OTC's computer systems to create and maintain required records regarding equipment repair and service
- Ability to operate forklift, and a pallet jack
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job
- Valid driver's license with driving record acceptable to OTC insurance company
- Must be able to work in an environment with possible paint and solvent odors present
- Ability to work in environments that may include:
- Moving mechanical parts
- Fumes or airborne particles
- Painting chemicals and solvents
- Electrical equipment
